Dive into the past as we uncover the secrets and stories behind the Cathedral's remarkable journey over the centuries. This session will focus on the turbulent Tudor period and the creation of Lambert Barnard's panel paintings.
We will be focusing on arts and crafts during this session; bringing the bling back to Henry VIII's robes, dressing up in Tudor finery and flexing our portraiture skills by drawing the missing Kings and Queens.
The enormous painting on wood, that can be spotted in the South Transept, was originally painted in the 1530s and took around four years to finish. It was designed to show Bishop Sherborn's loyalty to Henry VIII at a very tricky time in history. Portraits of many Kings of England can be seen along the bottom of the painting; some spaces are empty because of damage that was done during te English Civil War and when the Cathedral spire fell in 1861.
